Discover the National Landscape Conservation System

Photography Contest
deadline: May 1, 2005

Description

This year marks the fifth anniversary of America’s “National Landscape Conservation System” (NLCS) — the best of the Bureau of Land Management’s lands and waters.  The NLCS encompasses the BLM’s National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Historic Trails, Wild and Scenic Rivers Wilderness Areas, Wilderness Study Areas, and other conservation management areas.

The NLCS is America’s commitment to protect the rugged and wild character of places like Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Nevada’s Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and Montana’s Upper Missouri River   for future generations.

Please join the NLCS Coalition in celebrating the fifth anniversary of the NLCS by submitting your best photographs from the NLCS! (click here for a complete listing of lands, waters, and trails)  These photos can be from any part of the NLCS—a river you love to float or fish, a favorite hiking trail through a canyon in the NLCS, an archaeological site in a National Monument.

Up to 12 winning photographs will be featured in an exhibition in Washington, D.C., and presented to Members of Congress.  Each winning photographer will also receive a $50 certificate to Patagonia
®, and a grand prize winner will receive a certificate for $150 to Patagonia®.

The mission of the National Landscape Conservation System is to conserve, protect, and restore these nationally significant landscapes that have outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values for the benefit of current and future generations.

Winning Photographs

There will be one round of judging.  A judging panel will be appointed by the NLCS Coalition, and will consist of members of the Coalition and may include employees of the Bureau of Land Management, Members of Congress or their staff, and others with expertise in photography, land management, historical preservation, or ecology.  Decisions of the judges are final.
