The Himalayan Club & The Explorers Club South Asia Chapter organized an illustrated talk “George Mallory – Everest Pioneer” by Conrad Anker at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi on Wednesday, 7th September, 2011. This is a recording of that event.
According to Wikipedia, Conrad Anker (born 1962) is an American rock climber, mountaineer, and author famous for his challenging ascents in the high Himalaya and Antarctica. He is a member of The North Face climbing team and also works closely with Timex Expedition as brand ambassador. In 1999 he was a key member of the search team which located the remains of legendary British climber George Mallory on Mount Everest. Anker is the climber who spotted Mallory’s body. He lives in Bozeman, Montana.
In 2007, he led the Altitude Everest Expedition 2007, joined by Leo Houlding, Jimmy Chin and Kevin Thaw, and retraced Mallory’s last steps on Everest.
George Mallory – Everest Pioneer : Renowned mountaineer Conrad Anker recounts the
story of the legendary Everest explorer George Mallory and unravels the mystery of the
Everest climbing history through a multimedia presentation. The disappearance of
Mallory and Sandy Irvine on their Everest summit bid in June 1924 is one of climbing’s
great enduring mysteries, and Conrad’s discovery of Mallory’s body and analysis of the
find has shed new light on the pioneering climbs of the early expeditions on the slopes of
Everest. Being a member of the Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition, Conrad is
uniquely placed to give us a first-hand account of the emotions felt upon finding the
body of Mallory 75 years after the legendary explorer’s disappearance from the slopes of
Everest as well as its significance in the Everest climbing history.
Conrad Anker is a well known American rock climber, mountaineer, and author famous

the most challenging terrains in the world has taken him from the mountains of Alaska
and Antarctica to the big walls of Patagonia and Baffin Island, the mountains of
Karakoram Himalayas, and the massive peaks of the Khumbu Himalayas—including
ascent of Everest & winter ascent of Ama Dablam among others. In May 1999, as a
member of the Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition, Conrad discovered the body of
George Mallory, the legendary Everest explorer of the 1920s. His discovery of Mallory’s
body is, according to him, his most favourite moment in history as well his most
Conrad is the author of the best-selling book The Lost Explorer and has been involved in
many films. Most recently, Conrad was the Expedition Leader for filming the IMAX
movie The Wildest Dream (2010), in which he retraced the steps of Mallory on the
latter’s last fatal expedition to Everest. Born in 1962, Conrad is a board member of the
Conservation Alliance, the American Alpine Club, and the Alex Lowe Charitable
Foundation, which runs the Khumbu Climbing School, a mountaineering school for
Sherpas and high altitude workers. Conrad has been called ‘the world’s greatest
adventurer’ by Outside magazine. In life, Conrad believes in spreading the message ‘be
good, be kind, be happy’.
