What would it really take to reach the top of Mt. Everest?

I dont have the slightest clue about climbing mountains and have never climbed before. Please tell me how much physically in shape you need to be and how to prepare for this mountain in particular.
Can I climb it by myself or do I need a team?
It takes a few months and about $20,000. There are professional guides that will head a team to take climbers to the top.
So if you have the money and can be off work for a few months you can do it.

At this point in the game Everest requires:
An obscene amount of money to climb it -guide services and all
That you not only be in good physical shape but in good shape for being on mountains-not the same thing
That you can accept misery and an enormous amount of physical amd mental discomfort to achieve your goals
That you can accept the fact that you could easily die trying to climb it or that you are willing to watch friends and fellow climbers die
That you could lose body parts in the process
